Children with Type 1 Diabetes
This weekend was Cate's debut in the Spring Ice Show. She skated in a Cinco de Mayo number and had a fabulous time. The practices, performances and downtime never would have been possible without the great education you have given Cate and I. Her blood sugars were 100 to 170 the whole time. It's great to know that she can do whatever she wants!
Thanks for all you have done for Cate! Heidi (Cate's mom)
Education & Management of Kids with Type-1 Diabetes
If you're a parent or caregiver of a child with diabetes, you know the meaning of the word "challenge". No two days are alike, emotions and hormones run rampant, and every little thing seems to shoot blood sugars way up or way down. And just when you think you have it all figured out, your child grows and everything changes!
Children and Diabetes
Wherever you are, Integrated Diabetes Services is here to help you navigate the complexities of managing your child's diabetes on a day-to-day basis. Our diabetes educators have had diabetes for many years and many are parents as well, so we know what it's like trying to balance twelve things at once. We're experts at relating to both parents and kids, and can find practical solutions to most blood sugar control challenges, including:
- Sports participation
- Cafeteria carb counting
- Daycamp & sleepaway camp
- Parties & sleepovers
- Sick days
- Pump site issues
- "Kid Stresses"
- Junk food / grazing
- Growth & menstruation
- ... and much more!
Parents Coaching Children with Diabetes:
Parenting a child with diabetes can be a lonely and, at times, frustrating experience. Our team is here to lend support... and much more. Whether it be in-person or remotely via phone/internet, we can teach you the latest diabetes management techniques and make sure your child's insulin program is meeting his or her needs. Being on the cutting edge of technology, Integrated Diabetes Services specializes in insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring, downloading software, and many of the other modern tools for diabetes care. In addition to helping to analyze data, we offer a unique CGM (continuous glucose monitor) trial service for those looking to sample a system and learn how to fine-tune their child's blood sugar control.
If you take advantage of one of our retainer service packages, our diabetes educators are available to answer questions, offer opinions, review data and make adjustments whenever the need arises. In addition to a full range of diabetes education and management services, we offer a special "diabetes simulation" for parents who want to get a true feel for what it is like to live with diabetes. Plus, as your child grows, we'll counsel you (and them) on new age-appropriate self-care responsibilities.
Our team is well-versed at teaching and coaching kids with diabetes of all ages. By staying upbeat and communicating at an age-appropriate level, we strive to make a positive impact every one of our clients. Every child is treated as an individual, with unique goals, interests, skills and abilities. We never "pigeon hole" kids into any particular diabetes management program or create unrealistic expectations. We believe strongly in letting kids be kids. Diabetes should not get in the way of letting them enjoy all the things kids like to do.
Helping to increase your child's sense of independence is important as well. When the time is right, we'll introduce your child to new self-care skills designed to enhance their confidence and personal involvement. And care for your child's diabetes need not stop when they are away from home. Through our remote coaching services, we can help oversee and manage your child's diabetes while they are away at boarding school, college, or wherever life might take them.
Anyone who is involved in caring for your child - grandparents, babysitters, friends, siblings, school personnel, etc. - is sure to have questions and concerns related to diabetes. We are pleased to offer customized services for teaching things like diabetes basics, handling hypoglycemic emergencies, sick day care, pump maintenance, and carb counting. Let us know what your needs are, and we'll put a program together just for you.
The Service Process:
All consultations are available in-person or remotely via phone and the internet (including video conferencing). Prior to your initial consultation, we'll send you a self-care assessment packet to complete and return to us. That way, we won't waste your valuable time with questions and topics that are of no interest to you. The assessment will be reviewed by your personal diabetes coach who will begin formulating a teaching/management plan in preparation for your scheduled consultation.
During the initial consultation, we will discuss your personal goals, review your child's current diabetes management plan and offer suggestions for improving your control. We will formulate a system for keeping and communicating records, provide essential education, and outline a plan for helping you achieve your long-term goals.
After the initial consultation, follow-up options include individual consultations scheduled at your convenience, or a retainer service that includes monthly scheduled consultations and unlimited access to our team (to review records, answer questions and make necessary adjustments).
I cannot thank you enough for your support. It really has been a wild ride, but you have kept me sane, kept me from pulling my hair out, and kept me from crying my eyes out. I appreciate all of your input and suggestions. My husband and I are forever grateful for helping my little Livvy."
- Danielle (mom of Olivia, age 3, Florida USA)
"The education I received from Integrated Diabetes Services is priceless. For my money, it's the best way to get quality, up-to-date information and guidance."
- Kali Moule (mom of Avery), Saskatchewan, Canada
"I am so grateful to you and your team. I see Vasili's control getting better and better. He was just zinging around with so much more energy this past week... just like a regular kid. You guys are amazing!"
- Ruth Hrebinka (mom of Vasili), Springfield, VA
